    Rowan’s Story

Rowan was bummed.  Her leukemia had returned and now she needed a bone marrow transplant.  If that wasn’t difficult enough, she was going to be on isolation in the hospital for at least 90 days!  That’s a lot of down time to spend cooped up in one 12’ by 12’ room with only family and medical staff coming to visit.

However, Rowan had a secret outlet, once a week on Thursday’s at 2pm she met with Anthony from the Digital Learning Department of the New York Hall of Science.  She learned participated in activities around science themes such as; light, gravity, cells, physics, and even got to see a cow’s eye dissection (gross!).  Although Rowan couldn’t leave her room, the world of science was brought to her through her computer.  No one was happier than Rowan to be off isolation, because she had great science stories to share with her friends at school.

Rowan is now in 9th grade, and enjoying high school and has discovers a love of science!
